a16z Warns of 'Wallet Wars': How AI Agents Will Change Online Payments
- a16z has highlighted competition among Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify for payments through AI agents.*
- The use of virtual cards may deprive users of card bonuses, benefits, and purchase protections.*
- Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are developing standards that will allow AI agents to pay without direct access to the user's card.*
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has described the competition among payment services for integration with AI agents, which can already book hotels and purchase goods on behalf of users. According to the report, the main battle is not only for the ability to process payments but also for preserving bonuses, purchase protections, and relationships between customers and sellers.
AI agents can now book the hotel and order the cleats, as long as they're allowed to pay. That's set off the "wallet wars," with major players racing to connect to agents: -- Stripe's Link: 300M users -- Shopify's Shop Pay: 250M users -- PayPal: 400M+ users How your agent pays matters. If a wallet pays the store with its own stand-in card, the purchase goes through, but your card rewards, purchase protections, and relationship with the store can get lost along the way. Say your agent books a United flight on your airline credit card. If the wallet pays United with its own virtual card, the money moves, and your miles may never show up. Agents also have to pick the right card for each purchase, and when one books the wrong hotel dates, someone has to make it right. Where it's all headed: new open standards from Visa, Mastercard, and Amex. "The best of all worlds is a future where my agent can use my credit card, without having my credit card." According to a16z, the development of agent commerce creates a new market for payment platforms, but also raises questions about who will be responsible for AI errors and who will control payment routing.
Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify Compete for AI Agents
For an agent to make a purchase independently, it needs access to the user's payment tools. Therefore, large companies are trying to integrate their services with new AI assistants.
Among the main competitors, a16z identifies:
- Stripe Link --- 300 million users;
- Shopify Shop Pay --- 250 million users;
- PayPal --- over 400 million users.
Stripe and Shopify are already actively integrating payment solutions with AI agents, including Muse from Meta and Instinct. PayPal, for its part, has an extensive network of consumers and sellers.
However, access to payment data does not guarantee that the agent will be able to make a purchase under the terms expected by the user. For example, if AI books a flight ticket through a credit card with an airline's bonus program, but pays the seller with a virtual card from the payment service, the user may not receive bonus miles. Similarly, specific card benefits and purchase protections may not be preserved.
This is because two separate operations are actually taking place: between the user and the payment intermediary and between the intermediary and the seller. As a result, the payment goes through, but the connection between the customer and the store may be disrupted.
From Payment Tokens to Open Standards
Another issue is the choice of payment method. If the agent has access to multiple wallets and cards, it must consider bonuses, user preferences, seller conditions, and transaction protection. Therefore, according to a16z, agents will need not only payment data but also clear rules for selecting a payment method.
A separate question is responsibility for errors. If a user instructs an agent to book a hotel for $500, but it chooses the wrong dates, it is unclear who should compensate for the losses. The author emphasizes that permission to pay, proper execution of the order, and buyer protection are different tasks that require separate mechanisms.
As a potential direction for development, a16z mentions open standards for agent commerce that payment systems Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are working on. Among the relevant initiatives are Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay, and Amex ACE.
It is worth noting that Mastercard launched a service for payments between AI agents in June 2026.
Such standards are expected to allow agents to use the user's payment details without direct access to their card. To do this, the wallet will create a limited token with rules, such as a spending limit or permission to pay only to a specific seller. At the same time, the transaction will be linked to the original card, which will help preserve bonuses and the owner's rights.
The best scenario is a future where my agent can use my credit card without having the credit card itself, the author concluded.
Earlier, we reported that Coinbase introduced crypto wallets for AI agents, while MoonPay launched MoonPay Agents, giving AI agents access to wallets with the ability to conduct transactions via command interface.
