Amazon is pushing to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to 500 cities and towns across the United States. The company aims to achieve one million deliveries by the end of the year, and Prime Air is expected to serve 30 million customers by 2026. The drones are designed to deliver items weighing up to 5 pounds (approximately 2.3 kg) within a 7.5-mile radius. Amazon secured the authority for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in May 2024, allowing it to operate drone deliveries in a wider area. However, the FAA's environmental review process remains, meaning that the nationwide expansion of drone delivery will not solely rely on technical approvals. Community reactions are mixed, with complaints about noise issues being reported, but Amazon claims that the overall response has been positive. Competitors like Wing and Walmart are also entering the drone delivery market, leading to competition between major retailers and logistics platforms.
