Bitcoin achieved a return of 870000 dollars from an initial investment of 10000 dollars over a decade, while only 13% of actively managed US large-cap equity funds outperformed their passive counterparts through June 30, according to Morningstar data. Bitcoin closed at 673.34 dollars on June 30, 2016, and at 58558.86 dollars on June 30, 2026, resulting in an 8597% total return and an annualized return of approximately 56.3%. In contrast, the SPY's 10-year annualized total return was 15.35%, leading a 10000 dollar investment to grow to about 41704 dollars. The arrival of US spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 limited active managers' ability to diversify. Investors faced volatility, with Bitcoin experiencing significant drawdowns of 83% from its 2017 peak and 77% from its 2021 peak. Despite these challenges, Bitcoin's performance over the decade highlights its potential as an asset class compared to traditional active management, which has seen net outflows of 7.78 billion dollars while index funds attracted 119.32 billion dollars.
