Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, has predicted that next year will be the worst year for memory semiconductor supply shortages. In an interview with CNBC on the 13th, he stated, "Next year will probably be the worst year for memory shortages," and expressed his commitment to expanding supply capabilities. He also mentioned the intention to build a memory factory in the United States, but emphasized the need to find a suitable location. SK Hynix is currently constructing a packaging plant in Indiana, but does not have a mass production facility for memory semiconductors. Counterpoint Research has analyzed that the cost of building semiconductor factories in the U.S. is about twice as high as in Korea. Chairman Chey explained that the demand for HBM is increasing due to the expansion of AI infrastructure and that the nature of HBM products is changing. He added that HBM5 will evolve to be more customer-centric. Additionally, he highlighted the impact of rising memory prices on the final product prices, emphasizing the need for price stability. SK Hynix has confirmed an investment of 54 trillion won in its Yongin and Cheongju plants. Chairman Chey stressed the necessity of combining the strengths of the U.S. software industry with the hardware strengths of Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
