Coinbase's Irish Subsidiary Settles with Central Bank, Paying €3.25 Million Fine
Coinbase's Irish subsidiary, Coinbase Ireland Limited (CBIE), has reached a settlement with the Central Bank of Ireland regarding customer fund protection measures, agreeing to pay a fine of €3.25 million. CBIE provides fiat services to European customers, and the investigation involved the calculation of customer fund protection amounts, fund storage, and the outsourcing arrangements of certain protection processes. Issues identified during the investigation included the commingling of funds from different entity customers, using CBIE protection accounts to pay out part of the withdrawals for other entity customers, and a coding error that resulted in an average funding gap of approximately 0.54% in the protection accounts during 2023 and the first half of 2024. Coinbase stated that all related issues have been rectified, and no customers suffered financial losses or were unable to withdraw funds as a result.
