Court rules against former official in wrongful dismissal case over crypto mining

A former senior official at the Korea Food Research Institute lost a wrongful dismissal suit after being fired for secretly mining cryptocurrency using the institute’s facilities. The official, referred to as A, installed two GPU servers in a storage area of a promotional hall that was not in use and mined approximately 71 million altcoins from February to September 2023. The official also conducted air-conditioning installation and network and electrical work using the institute’s budget. The court determined that the dismissal was not a disciplinary action that had lost its validity according to socially accepted standards, resulting in a verdict against the plaintiff.
