The Hong Kong police have revealed a cryptocurrency investment scam targeting the elderly. An 80-year-old retired man clicked on a fake link in an online advertisement in June this year and downloaded a fraudulent app called "Trust Wallet." The scammers impersonated platform customer service, luring him to invest with promises of "high returns and big profits." Following their instructions, the victim withdrew money from his bank and exchanged cash for cryptocurrency at a cryptocurrency exchange. Over the course of a month and a half, he transferred a total of over HKD 5 million worth of ETH into a wallet designated by the scammers in multiple transactions. It was only when he could not withdraw funds from the fake app and the customer service went offline that he realized he had been scammed. The police remind families to pay attention to the online habits and financial situations of the elderly, share anti-fraud information, and be wary of fake apps and investment scams promising high returns.
