(Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images) The PGA Championship gets underway this week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele are among the betting favorites at golf’s second major of the year. The return to Quail Hollow marks the first time the PGA Championship has been held at the venue since 2017, when Justin Thomas claimed his first major championship. As at every major, there are storylines aplenty. After completing his career Grand Slam last month at the Masters Tournament, McIlroy looks to continue his momentum at a course at which he’s already won four PGA Tour events. Scheffler, coming off a victory at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in which he posted a winning score of 31-under par, looks to enjoy a more routine PGA Championship week than last year, where he was arrested and taken away in handcuffs prior to the second round at Valhalla Country Club in Kentucky before being released from jail and returning to the course less than an hour before his tee time. Defending PGA champion Xander Schauffele, meanwhile, looks to add another Wanamaker Trophy to his collection after his breakthrough major victory in 2024. This is the 35 th consecutive year that CBS Sports is broadcasting the PGA Championship, and for the 35 th straight year Jim Nantz will host the network’s coverage from the 18 th hole tower. Additionally, ESPN2 will air an alternative telecast called “ESPN BET at the PGA Championship” during portions of each round. Featured Group coverage exclusively on ESPN+ will have eight groups per day on Thursday and Friday (four in the morning and four in the afternoon) from 8 a.m. through the conclusion of play. PGA Championship Favorites and Featured Groups Among the standout groups on Thursday are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 2 Rory McIlroy, and defending champion Xander Schauffele, who tee off together at 8:22 a.m. ET. That group will also be back on the course Friday afternoon at 1:47 p.m. ET. “I’m playing with two guys that are playing some of the best golf in the world. Xander won two majors last year, and Rory already won THE PLAYERS and the Masters this year so he’s playing some fantastic golf,” said Scheffler, who tied for second and eighth in his past two PGA Championships. “It should be a lot of fun. I’ve seen that pairing before, and we have a good time out there, and it’s competitive. I think when I look back on my career, these will be some of the fondest memories getting to play with some of the best players in the world and compete to try to win tournaments.” Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy during the final round of the 2022 TOUR Championship at East Lake ... Among the compelling groups in Thursday’s afternoon wave, Jordan Spieth looks to complete his own career Grand Slam playing alongside Patrick Reed and Ludvig Aberg at 1:25 p.m. ET. Thomas, who doesn’t see many similarities to the course at which he won the PGA Championship in 2017, will tee off with Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa at 1:14 p.m. on Thursday. “It was eight years ago. It was a completely different golf course,” said Thomas. “It was Bermuda (grass) in August versus overseed in May. But the fact that I know the golf course and have had some success on it is definitely helpful.” Justin Thomas poses with the Wanamaker Trophy after winning the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail ... Ninety nine out of the top 100 players are here,” said PGA of America President Don Rea. “If you’re going to be the best, you have to beat the best.” What To Expect From Quail Hollow... And The Weather At The PGA Championship The last time the PGA Championship was played at Quail Hollow, Thomas won by two shots over Francesco Molinari, Louis Oosthuizen and Patrick Reed. This year, Quail Hollow will again be a par 71 and play at 7,626 yards, slightly longer than in 2017. “It’s a really tough golf course,” said Schauffele. “I think everyone knows what they need to do. There’s no sort of trick to play this golf course. A lot of people will hit it to the same spot. A lot of people will miss it to the same spot as well, and it’s about who — it’s not bad because it’s like who can get up-and-down better when they’re out of position, and who can capitalize when they’re in a good position.” The Wanamaker Trophy on the 18th hole at Quail Hollow Country Club, which is hosting its second PGA ... More Championship. (Photo by Gary Kellner/PGA of America via Getty Images) After a challenging start to the week with heavy rain causing Monday’s practice round to be closed to spectators, the tournament days themselves look promising. The forecast for Thursday through Sunday shows temperatures in the mid to high 80s with moderate winds between 5-12 mph. There’s only a 10% chance of rain on Thursday, rising to 30% on Friday, 40% on Saturday, and dropping to 20% on Sunday. While there’s a possibility of afternoon storms, particularly on Friday and Saturday, the weather isn’t projected to significantly disrupt play. The early week rainfall could result in softer course conditions, potentially favoring longer hitters who can take advantage of the lengthy layout. Quail Hollow’s famous “Green Mile” finishing stretch — holes 16, 17, and 18 — is considered one of the toughest closing sequences in major championship golf and could once again prove to be the decisive test during Sunday’s final round. “The approach shot into 16 is really tough. The tee shot on 17 is really tough. Then you’ve got two really challenging shots on 18 with the water on the left side,” said Scheffler. “There’s no real breathers in that stretch of holes and should make for a fun finish.” Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikmatuszewski/2025/05/14/heres-how-to-watch-the-2025-pga-championship/
