Javier Milei confirmed he will eliminate agricultural export taxes, but avoided announcing new measures at the Rural Expo

President Javier Milei reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating export taxes on agriculture, although he avoided announcing new measures for the sector during the inaugural event of the Palermo Rural Exhibition. In his speech, the president responded to the request of the president of the Argentine Rural Society (SRA), Nicolás Pino, who had asked for export duties to "cease to exist by law and forever."

"We are on the path to completely liberate them," Milei assured, stating that the definitive reduction of export taxes will be possible thanks to the growth of other exporting sectors, such as energy and mining. "We are on the way to fully liberate them."

The President defended the economic measures implemented since the beginning of his administration and stated that agriculture still produces under strong inherited restrictions. "The agricultural sector still bears the burden of export taxes; everything they achieved was with one hand tied behind their back. We are on the way to fully liberate them. What we are seeing is just the starting point. A radically different agricultural sector is coming than the one we knew," he stated.

Additionally, he questioned the policies applied over the last decades and asserted that the agricultural sector has been used as a permanent source of fiscal resources.

"Politics turned agriculture into the last resort payer of Argentina. It was attacked with restrictions and other measures. The golden goose was attacked. It was an exploited sector, tied hand and foot. We are turning that dark page forever," he affirmed.

One of the central themes of the speech was the financing of a future elimination of export taxes. According to Milei, the growth of sectors such as oil, gas, and mining will allow compensating for the loss of revenue that would imply moving towards a total elimination of export duties.

"Today, energy and mining are rapidly supporting the country's export takeoff. In front of those who see a risk, we want to point out that it presents, above all, an opportunity. The growth of those sectors, which previously produced nothing, is what will finance the removal of export taxes and the true empowerment of a thriving agricultural sector in the coming decades," he stated.

During his presentation, the President reviewed the main measures adopted for the sector, including the elimination of currency restrictions, the reduction of tariffs for the import of inputs and machinery, and the opening of new markets. "The damned restrictions took two-thirds of the agricultural sector's income," he stated, defending the lifting of currency restrictions.

He also assured that the potential of agriculture is limited by decades of interventionist policies. "The ceiling that politics placed on agriculture for 100 years is being lifted, and when we manage to fully eliminate it, this sector will soar like never before in its history," he pointed out.

In this line, he highlighted the recent performance of the meat complex and stated that "beef exports grew by 46% in value during the first five months of the year," mainly driven by demand from the U.S. market.

Despite the expectations in the agricultural sector, the event concluded without announcements of new tax reductions or other specific measures.
