Nikita Bier Bids Farewell to X Product Team: What Has He Left Behind?

From "climbing to the top by posting" to "a poster," Nikita Bier's rise and retreat.

Choosing to downgrade himself to a "poster" is the term Nikita Bier used to describe his exit from the front lines of X's product team.

In the early hours of August 6, Beijing time, Nikita Bier announced that he would no longer be responsible for product work at X but would continue to serve as an advisor. From "climbing to the top by posting" at the end of June 2025 to retreating back to the X timeline about 13 months later, he has not completely left X but has stepped down from the position he described as a "24/7 job" as the product lead.

Nikita Bier stated, "Serving the X community is a 'once-in-a-lifetime honor,' but managing this application requires being online 24 hours a day, and now it's time to take a breath."

This statement aligns well with his style. When he joined X in July 2025, Nikita Bier jokingly claimed he had "officially climbed to the top by posting"; about 13 months later, he has again "downgraded" himself to a poster.

What Nikita Bier referred to as "climbing to the top by posting" is not entirely a joke. He has long treated X as an open product notebook, frequently sharing insights on consumer app growth, user retention, data analysis, and social product design, and directly responding to user queries about X's features and algorithms. In 2022, during Elon Musk's push to acquire Twitter, he publicly posted to recommend himself for the product role at Twitter; by 2025, he indeed became the product lead at X. Upon taking office, Bier summarized this experience as "officially climbing to the top by posting."

At least for now, X has not announced a direct successor to Nikita Bier as the new product lead. In his farewell post, Bier specifically mentioned three team leads who will continue to advance related work: X's design lead Benji Taylor, core product engineering lead Singhai, and mobile engineering lead Jonah Katz.

However, this is merely a statement from Nikita Bier regarding the existing team structure. As of now, X has not disclosed Bier's formal successor.

400 Days: From Timeline to Android App

In his resignation statement, Nikita Bier noted that over the past approximately 400 days, X has revamped its timeline, Android app, new user onboarding, notifications, and chat features, and launched nearly 30 new products.

Some of the more notable changes include the reorganization of the recommended timeline, the introduction of a Grok-driven custom timeline, enhancements to XChat group chat capabilities, updates to video creation tools, and the completion of a rewrite of the new Android app by July 2026.

Nikita Bier referred to the Android rewrite as one of the largest engineering projects in X's history, stating that the primary goal of the new app is not only to improve speed and stability but also to allow the Android platform to receive new features more quickly.

These adjustments also correspond to the product philosophy that Nikita Bier has publicly discussed in the past. He has posted that when a person is willing to use a social app, product developers should see this as a "miracle," and every click from users is precious; if an action neither improves the network nor provides value to other users, the long-term accumulation will harm the product.

In terms of account transparency, X launched the "About This Account" feature in 2025, allowing users to view information such as the account's country or region, registration time, and username changes. Nikita Bier referred to this as the first step in maintaining the authenticity of the "global public square."

Regarding growth, Bier stated in his resignation announcement that X's new user acquisition and engagement are setting records, with the App Store ranking rising 70 places compared to a year ago.

Adding and Subtracting for Crypto Twitter

The most tangible product Nikita Bier has left for Crypto Twitter is Smart Cashtags.

Ordinary Cashtags are simply asset tags like "$BTC" or "$SOL," but the same code may correspond to stocks, tokens, or multiple identically named crypto assets. X launched Smart Cashtags in 2026, allowing users to select the correct asset when posting or searching, even directly entering smart contract addresses; clicking on the tag allows users to view real-time prices, market charts, and related posts mentioning that asset within X.

When releasing this feature, Nikita Bier summarized that X has always been an important platform for traders and investors to obtain financial information, with a large number of funding decisions influenced by timeline content daily, and Smart Cashtags is just the first step in X's service to the financial and crypto community.

The significance of Smart Cashtags lies in connecting the previously scattered market discussions, asset identification, and price data on the platform. Especially in the crypto market, where there are many identically named tokens, using contract addresses to confirm specific assets can reduce the chances of clicking the wrong tag or misreading market trends.

This direction is also related to his personal experience. Before joining X, Bier was already an advisor in the Solana ecosystem, primarily helping to expand its mobile application ecosystem. Benji Taylor, who joined X as design lead in 2026, also has a notable background in crypto products: he was responsible for the design of Base, a network under Coinbase, founded a self-custody wallet called Family, and served as Chief Product Officer at Aave after Family was acquired by Aave.

Nikita Bier has not been entirely permissive regarding Web3 content. In January 2026, he announced adjustments to X's developer API policy, stopping the allowance for third-party applications to incentivize users to post through tokens, points, or other economic rewards. This policy directly affected InfoFi products like Kaito and Cookie DAO that adopted a "post-to-earn" model. Bier cited the reason that such incentives led to a large amount of low-quality content generated by AI and spam replies.

It is worth noting that X later reestablished formal data cooperation with Kaito. On July 23, Kaito AI announced that it had signed a data agreement with X to support various application scenarios. Kaito did not disclose the scope of data involved in the agreement, costs, or specific products, so it cannot be concluded that X has restored Kaito's original Yaps model or lifted the restrictions on "post-to-earn" products. This cooperation agreement was announced less than two weeks before Nikita Bier's resignation.

A Product Person Skilled at Making Young People "Unable to Resist Clicking"

Nikita Bier's resume does not follow the traditional path of a corporate executive. He resembles a serial entrepreneur who repeatedly creates small applications, experiences failures, and occasionally ignites the entire App Store.

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where he created Politify: users input their situations to compare how different presidential candidates' policies would affect their personal finances. This product spread rapidly during the 2012 U.S. election. Berkeley's records show that Politify reached approximately 4 million people in its first month.

What truly made him famous was tbh, launched in 2017. It allowed high school students to anonymously compliment classmates through multiple-choice questions, using "structured input" instead of "free text" to reduce insults and cyberbullying from a product structure perspective. Three months after its launch, tbh achieved about 5 million downloads and was subsequently acquired by Facebook.

Interestingly, tbh was not the first application he created out of a sudden inspiration. He later shared at Berkeley that the team had shut down 14 failed products before finding this model.

Years later, he reassembled the concepts of anonymous compliments, campus relationships, and paid clue viewing into Gas. Gas launched in the summer of 2022 and was acquired by Discord in January 2023. TechCrunch reported at the time that Gas had accumulated approximately 7.4 million installs from launch to acquisition. Before being acquired by Discord, the Gas team consisted of only four people.

In 2025, he also created a tool called Explode for iMessage that allowed messages to self-destruct. Before and after joining X, he served as a product growth partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners and became an advisor to Solana in March 2025.

This experience also explains why X sought him to lead product development: Nikita Bier may not be the most typical platform manager, but he is very familiar with why people click, why they stay, and why they are willing to share a product with friends.

Now, he has stepped down from the position of product lead at X but has not left X. In his own words, this is a return from managing the timeline back to the timeline.
