Optimism targets 200 ms subblocks, data feeds lose key information
Optimism aims for 200 ms subblocks on OP Mainnet, reducing the preconfirmation interval from 250 milliseconds in a change targeted for Aug. 31. Subblocks, previously known as Flashblocks, provide incremental updates while a normal block is being built, allowing apps to receive feedback before block finalization. This 20% speed increase introduces a compatibility risk as four fields in each streamed payload will contain all-zero values: state_root, block_hash, and withdrawals_root, while withdrawals will be an empty list. The payload type remains ExecutionPayloadFlashblockDeltaV1, enabling software to parse the stream without errors. Fields like receipts_root and logs_bloom will still have valid data, potentially misleading systems that assume all decoded fields are meaningful. Subblocks are preconfirmations, not finalized blocks, and users should treat zeroed fields as absent. Most applications connect to a subblocks-aware RPC provider, allowing them to derive preconfirmed data without relying on the zeroed fields. The responsibility lies with applications that directly ingest the WebSocket stream and RPC providers that forward raw fields. Providers must ensure that the zeroed fields do not affect downstream state or balances. Alchemy and QuickNode have updated their documentation to reflect the 200 ms updates. Optimism notes that the Aug. 31 target may change and that the rollout is gradual, with no set completion time.
