Starcloud has raised a total of $200 million for its space-based AI data center business. On March 30, 2026, it completed a Series A funding round of $170 million, with a valuation of $1.1 billion. Starcloud announced that it will launch its first satellite, Starcloud-1, in November 2025, carrying NVIDIA H100 GPUs to perform AI training in space. The next phase, Starcloud-2, will be a commercial mission equipped with a GPU cluster and 24-hour access capabilities, expected to be fully operational in sun-synchronous orbit by 2027. The orbital data center is an infrastructure that carries servers and GPUs on satellites to perform computations in space, claiming to solve the power and cooling issues faced by ground data centers. However, this claim has yet to be validated, and actual economic viability will depend on launch and operational costs. Philip Johnston, co-founder of Starcloud, envisions an orbital computing capacity of about 20GW with up to 88,000 satellites, stating that competitiveness will arise if launch costs drop to $500 per kg. However, tasks requiring ultra-low latency remain challenging. The American Astronomical Society and the Secure World Foundation have expressed concerns about the environmental issues associated with large satellite constellations and raised apprehensions regarding Starcloud's application.
