Trump Administration Bypasses Iranian Negotiators to Contact Revolutionary Guard
Prefer us on GoogleIn mid-May, U.S. negotiators, while attempting to reach an agreement with Iran to end the war, were unable to confirm whether the Iranian representatives truly represented the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As a result, the Trump administration opted to bypass the Iranian negotiators and directly contact senior officials of the IRGC. The person responsible for this secret communication was Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, who had gained the trust of both the U.S. and the leadership of the IRGC. This incident highlights the difficulties in U.S.-Iran negotiations, as Washington could not determine who truly held decision-making power in Iran. Ultimately, the U.S. and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding, but it quickly fell apart.
