The UK authorities have sentenced two men linked to the hacking group 'Scattered Spider' to 5 years and 6 months in prison each. They are accused of carrying out ransomware and cryptocurrency extortion attacks. The two men pleaded guilty at the Woolwich Crown Court on June 22, and the sentencing took place on Thursday. They have been investigated as members of a criminal organization targeting medical and public institutions, as well as corporate computer networks. Scattered Spider is also linked to the September 2024 incident involving the London public transport network, with estimated recovery costs of £29 million, approximately $38.9 million. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that this organization has extorted at least $115 million in cryptocurrency from a minimum of 47 U.S. companies. They are also accused of demanding $15 million in Bitcoin after stealing the customer database of casino operator Caesars Entertainment in September 2023. U.S. authorities explained that their attacks caused disruptions to critical infrastructure and the federal court system. The FBI seized approximately $36 million worth of cryptocurrency from wallets linked to Scattered Spider in July 2024. This ruling highlights the reality of cryptocurrency being misused as ransom money and the strengthening of international cooperation in cybercrime investigations.

Bitcoin tore through the mid-$60,000s, cleared $70,000, blew past $75,000, and briefly touched $79,000+ before easing back to around $77,000 — a 20%+ move in a single week. The mood across crypto flipped almost overnight. But a violent rally is only the opening act. The more explosive the move, the more it calls for a clear, calm mind.
