Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced the x402 for payment functionality for AI agents, expanding discussions on micro-payment infrastructure utilizing Base and USD Coin (USDC). On May 7, AWS unveiled the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments preview, stating that AI agents can process payments when accessing APIs, MCP servers, web content, and other agents. This feature handles x402 protocol negotiation, wallet authentication, stablecoin payments, and payment proof delivery upon receiving an HTTP 402 Payment Required response. Developers can use Coinbase CDP wallets or Stripe Privy wallets as payment connections. The core of x402 is leveraging the HTTP 402 status code for the payment process, where the client receives payment instructions and sends the signed payment payload back to the server. AWS has stated that it will address the runaway spend issue, where agents incur costs beyond intent, with infrastructure-level spending limits and observability. The industry anticipates that x402 will serve as an infrastructure for AI agents and applications to exchange API usage fees with stablecoins; however, concerns have been raised about the difficulty of independently proving agent actions solely through payment hashes.
