Fidelity Digital reports Bitcoin can achieve quantum resistance
Fidelity Digital Assets stated in a research report titled 'Bitcoin’s Path to Quantum Resistance' that cryptographic upgrades for Bitcoin to prepare for quantum computing are technically feasible, but achieving consensus within the decentralized community poses the biggest challenge. The report warns that a powerful quantum computer using Shor’s algorithm could derive private keys from public keys, risking asset theft. It noted that a commercially viable cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography has not yet been developed. Additionally, Fidelity identified Blockstream’s SHRINCS BIP as a promising quantum-resistant alternative, describing it as a hybrid model that combines stateful and stateless hash signatures to enhance efficiency and security. The report emphasized that, due to Bitcoin's lack of a central authority, building social consensus among developers, miners, and node operators may be more challenging than the technical development itself.
