Meta has unveiled its open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) model, "Muse Glimmer," which runs on personal computers. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, urged the U.S. government to lower the policy barriers surrounding open-weight AI models. In a post released on the 10th, Zuckerberg stated that the policy barriers hindering the distribution of open-weight models need to be eased. Following the launch of Muse Glimmer, Meta plans to release additional open-weight models in the future. Muse Glimmer is designed as an agent-type model that is smaller in scale compared to competitors' large AI models, capable of planning tasks and executing multiple steps based on user instructions. It targets the demand for operating AI on personal devices without cloud access or API calls. Open-weight allows developers to download, distribute, modify, or run the model in local environments by publicly sharing the core computational values, known as weights. Meta is expanding developer access by presenting the weight release plan for Muse Spark 1.2 along with Muse Glimmer and the enhanced Muse Spark model family. Companies focused on closed models, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, primarily provide services through cloud or API, making it difficult for users to directly inspect the internal structure. Open-weight models offer developers significant flexibility in choosing their operational environment and cost structure. The spread of local AI can connect not only to personal devices and agent services but also to discussions on decentralized computing.
