El Reno Bitcoin Facility Closed Due to 3.8 Million Gallon Leak
In El Reno, Oklahoma, a Bitcoin mining facility has been closed by city authorities after approximately 3.8 million gallons of water leaked from private fire piping and hydrants, affecting the local water supply network. The city has temporarily shut off water supply to some areas, and El Reno public schools canceled classes for safety reasons. City officials plan to charge the operator for the cost of the leaked water. The mayor of El Reno stated that water fees and response labor costs will be billed to the operator. The facility is operated by Athlon Blockchain LLC, which began construction in 2021 but was issued a stop-work order in June 2023 due to multiple regulatory violations. The city plans to hold a hearing on September 14, considering the site a public hazard. This incident is exacerbating local opposition amid Oklahoma's drought situation and prompting a reevaluation of the physical infrastructure management of Bitcoin mining facilities.
