Ukraine and Finland are starting a joint project, UFEM (Ukraine-Finland Environmental Monitoring), aimed at monitoring water quality and assessing environmental damage. The project, scheduled for 2024-2028, includes a memorandum between the Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), and the State Water Agency. The goal of the project is to assist Ukraine in collecting and analyzing data on the state of surface waters and terrestrial biodiversity in accordance with EU approaches. Remote sensing will be used in the project to identify environmental harm and monitor water and biodiversity. Irina Ovchar, Deputy Minister of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, noted that developing an environmental monitoring system is essential for understanding the scale of damage caused by the war and for making informed decisions. The project also involves engaging experts, purchasing laboratory equipment, and training Ukrainian specialists. Additionally, pilot studies and modernization of monitoring systems are planned.
