Robinhood Sees Rapid Growth in Bitcoin, Gold, and Oil Prediction Contracts
Trading in Bitcoin, gold, and oil prices is surging in Robinhood's prediction market. The prediction market is expanding from a focus on sports and elections to short-term price fluctuations of financial assets, emerging as a new growth driver. JB Mackenzie, head of Robinhood's futures and prediction market business, explained this shift at the NEXTPredict conference held in New York. Mackenzie noted that while sports still hold the largest share, contracts based on price fluctuations of Bitcoin, oil, and gold are growing the fastest. The prediction market is a trading market for contracts where profits are determined by the occurrence of specific events, allowing investors to speculate on price movements without actually holding Bitcoin by predicting whether its price will exceed a certain level at a specified time. Robinhood has partnered with the U.S. regulatory prediction market exchange Kalshi to enter this related business, and as recent sports-related contracts face legal issues, contracts related to financial markets are gaining attention as a new growth area. Interest in financial events is also increasing, with the largest trading event contract on Robinhood last month being related to the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. The trend is also towards shorter contract maturities, with prediction products related to digital assets emerging that settle in as little as a week, a day, and recently even in 15-minute intervals. Mackenzie warned that such ultra-short contracts could lead to significant losses. The prediction market serves to attract customers to Robinhood's other financial services, and Mackenzie predicts that the prediction market will become the fastest-growing business.
